Welcome to the Palace Hotel Paignton
Sunday 31 August 2025 (6 Days)
Loved for its long sandy beaches, Paignton is a colourful, traditional seaside resort popular for its mild climate and lively seafront. The bustling pier, genteel buildings and streets and sense of class and style make this an English Riviera favourite for generations of visitors.
History
Originally a Celtic settlement, Paignton was a fishing village right up until the 19th Century when the harbour was built. The arrival of the railway in 1859 brought crowds of visitors and the town quickly became a favourite tourist destination for the Victorians. Today Paignton is a landmark of the English Riviera and continues to be one of the most popular resorts in the UK.
The Palace Hotel
Set in beautiful grounds, The Palace Hotel is situated in a desirable location on Paignton’s Esplanade and directly opposite Paignton seafront with Paignton town centre only a short walk away.
The Palace offers secure parking, efficient and professional service and tastefully decorated en suite bedrooms, many with sea views. There is an entertainment programme running every night of the week all year round, wireless internet connections, a health suite and wedding and conference facilities. Our extensive food and wine menu will provide the perfect dining experience with a mouth-watering selection of dishes and desserts.
Built in 1870, Steartfield House, as it was known, was the private residence to Washington Singer, one of the sons of Isaac Singer of the sewing machine fame. The house was one of only a handful on Paignton’s seafront and was set on its own substantial grounds.
In 1925, the property was sold. At this time, the large extension was added and the building became The Palace Hotel. Intended to be Paignton’s premier hotel, it became the social hub of the town.
During the Second World War, HM Government requisitioned The Palace for the Canadian Armed Forces. There are pictures in the Washington Bar showing the hotel at this time.
Trust Houses bought The Palace Hotel in 1950, and retained it until 1990 when, as Forte Hotels, the company was broken up and its many hotels sold off.
After another company who kept it for ten years bought the Palace in 2001, the Palace was passed into its current ownership, since when it has benefited from an on-going programme of significant refurbishment and upgrading.
